The Place Value of any number is based on the position of dthe igits within the number. That means if a number is 231, the place value of 1 is 100, whereas in 17, 1 holds the tens position, so its value is considered as 10.
In order to identify the place value of 1 in a number, one can use the place value chart. The place value chart represents the value of each position in terms of the power of 10. These values begin at 10⁰, and the exponent increases by one with each position. The digit at the rightmost place holds the smallest power and hence the smallest value.
Example: The position of digit “1” in the number 12 is second from the right, which implies the value 10¹. Similarly, in number 51, the digit “1” has a place value of 10°, which equals 1.
These positions can also be referred to in terms of their value, like if a digit holds the value 1, it is in the“ones” position, for value 10, it's in the “tens” position, for 10²(100) it's the hundreds position, and so on.
Follow the steps given below to determine the place value of a digit in a given number:
Step 1) Track the position of the digit 1 in the given number.
Step 2) Allot its position with its respective value.
Example: In number 183, “1” rests in the hundreds position, hence its position will hold the value 10².
Step 3) To find a digit’s numerical value, multiply the digit by its place value.
In the example above, the numerical value of “1” in 183 is: place of value of 1× digit = 100×1 = 100

Determining the place value is not much of rocket science, still it can be a bit confusing at the beginning. To make your understanding more promising, here are a few tips and tricks.
For example: 23 = 20+3 = 2×10 + 3×1
⇒2's position = Tens
⇒ 3's position = Ones
Let’s take a look at a few mistakes that happen frequently while evaluating the place value of 1 and how to avoid them.
Determine the place value of the digit 1 in the number 7,183?
The place value of 1 is in the hundreds place.
1's position is third to the right. Hence, its place value is 10² or 100 i.e. hundreds.
Write 62 in the expanded form.
6×10+2×1
62 = 60+2 = 6×10+2×1
In the number 457, which digit is in the hundreds place.
4
Allotting the place values to each digit for the given number. For 7, place value ⇒ 1, for 5 it's 10, and for 4, 10² or 100. Hence, 4 is in the hundreds place.
If the digits at the hundreds place in 243 is replaced with 0, what is the new number?.
43
Step (1): Finding the digit at the hundreds place. 243 ⇒ 200+40+3 ⇒ 2×100 + 4×10 + 3×1 ⇒2 is in the hundreds place.
Step (2) Replacing “2” with “0”. Now, the new number is 0 ×100 + 4×10 + 3×1 ⇒ 43
If 3 has the ones place and 5 in the hundreds place, what is the exact number?
503
Place value of 3 is 1, then its numerical value will be 3×1= 3. Similarly, 5 is in the hundreds place, hence its value is 5×100 = 500.
Since no digit is provided for tens place, 0 will take place. Placing each value, we get 500 + 3 = 503.
